Hoyas

Hoyas (a.k.a. Waxplant, Wax Flower, Porcelain Flower) make easy, rewarding and long-lived additions to shaded container gardens for the porch, patio or windowsill. They prefer high indirect sunlight and a good quality well-draining soil and should be allowed to become somewhat dry between waterings. Most Hoyas are twining climbers to trailing plants and can be used to good effect on a small trellis while hanging baskets make beautiful specimens as well. These are easy and rewarding plants as well as tough and forgiving if you forget to water. Many are grown for their uniquely shaped and colorful foliage and some are grown for their intense Jasmine-like fragrance (Fragrant Hoya). The Hindu Rope Plants and many other Hoyas are heirloom plants that our ancestors enjoyed and shared.

The Chelsea Common Hoya has somewhat uniquely and distinctively cupped deep green waxy heart-shaped thick succulent foliage with raised veins that adorn purplish-red vines. This is a vigorous and beautiful form of the Common Hoya, Hoya carnosa, and produces rounded hanging clusters composed of pink star-shaped waxy flower with a darker eye. Hoyas make easy to grow and forgiving heirloom plants that do best in well-drained soils in lightly shaded areas like a patio, porch, or as an indoor plant. A low dwarf form of Hoya that trails vigorously, and whose clusters of cream-colored to pure white flowers fill the air with a very lovely perfume for most of the year on established plants grown under good conditions. The Fragrant Hoya, Hoya lacunosa, is wonderful for a small hanging basket, as a groundcover beneath larger plants, and spilling from mixed container gardens in warm shaded sites. Its turn-your-head, intense Jasmine-like fragrance is strongest, even rivalling and exceeding some of the true Jasmines (Jasminum spp.), Gardenias, Night Blooming Jasmine, Night Blooming Cereus, Angel's Trumpet (Brugmansia spp. and hybrids) and Sweet Olives, after sunset when the dainty clusters of white nectar rich flowers may turn amber colored due to the dripping golden nectar. A perfect plant to add to a Moon Moth garden setting. item# 10050

Hanging clusters of buttery yellow fragrant flowers that are centered by a purple to burgundy star-shaped corona are produced during the warmer months of the year. Hoya cumingiana, or Paluki in its native Phillipines, is somewhat of a sprawling shrub-like Hoya with closely stacked small rounded glossy medium green foliage that may be at its best when trained to a support like a small trellis. Its foliage is nice enough that it could be grown for its architectural form with the flowers simply as a bonus. This is considered to be one of the easier to grow shrub-like Hoyas that mainly needs to be allowed to dry out somewhat between waterings. The fragrant flowers are likely to draw butterflies and other pollinators. Its ease of growth, unusual looking foliage, and fragrant flowers make this Hoya one of the more sought after species.
